Grinduro CA COVID & Wildfire Update

Updated: Wednesday, August 18, 2021

Based on our ongoing monitoring of public health guidance, data and community sentiment, we've made the decision to update our COVID protocol. This decision is being made based on our commitment to the Mt. Shasta community, and with respect for everyone's health and well being while attending Grinduro.

Grinduro California is now requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccine or negative test results in order to attend the event and pick up your race number. Please see details below:

  • In order to participate in Grinduro California in any capacity (racers, vendors, volunteers, staff, friends/family, etc), you must pass a COVID-19 Safety Check by providing either:
    • Official COVID-19 vaccination certification; or
    • A negative COVID-19 test result from within 72 hours before arriving at the event.

  • The COVID-19 Safety Check tent will be located near the registration/packet pickup tent.

  • Once you have cleared the Safety Check by showing the appropriate documents, you will be given a wristband to wear throughout the weekend so that other participants know that you have been checked. The wristbands will be color coded to help everybody easily communicate their comfort levels with personal contact. You will be asked to choose from the following colors:
    • RED = No personal contact.
    • YELLOW = Please ask me.
    • GREEN = Okay with personal contact.

  • If you do not present the proof of vaccination or negative test result, we cannot allow you to participate in the event in any capacity unfortunately, or allow you to enter the event venues during the event.

  • If you see somebody at the event venue without a wristband, that means they are not officially part of Grinduro California and have not yet been checked. You can choose to keep your distance.

  • If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, we would be happy to discuss it further with you. Please email us at

An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. By attending Grinduro California, you expressly agree to comply with any and all policies and safety guidelines put in place by the event organizers, and voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19, waiving all claims and potential claims against the event organizers, and their affiliated companies relating to such risks.

In addition to requiring proof of vaccine or negative test results, Grinduro CA will implement all State and/or County mandated COVID-19 protocol at the time of the event. In alignment with current State protocol, masks will not be required at Grinduro CA since it is fully outside. Since the COVID situation continues to develop and change, we will continually update our protocol as dictated by State and/or County guidelines. This could include measures such as mask wearing, social distancing, wave starts instead of a mass start, etc., in accordance with whatever State and/or County mandated protocol is in place at that time.

We are also working to make the event as safe as possible through the following efforts:

  • We are planning the overall Grinduro Village layout with fresh air and increased space in mind. Unlike previous years, there will be zero indoor space within the Grinduro Village. All vendor booths are outside and spread out, creating a safer environment for all participants.

  • We will provide extra hand washing stations and hand sanitizer throughout the venue.

  • We will have disposable masks available for free should anybody prefer to wear one.

  • In past years meal service was a self-serve buffet. This year, buffet meals will be served to you as you walk through the line. Service members will be gloved and masked for optimum safety.

  • The use of reusable cups at our beer, wine, and coffee vendors will not be allowed. The event will have disposable cups (recyclable or compostable) available for all beverage service. Note that we will still offer self-service water bottle refill stations, so please bring your own reusable cups/bottles for onsite water.

This goes without saying, but if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms prior to the event, you must stay home.

Fire season is getting worse every year. There are a number of wildfires currently burning throughout Northern California. The Dixie Fire in the Sierras has devastated communities and trail networks that many of us love, including the beloved Mt. Hough singletrack on the original Grinduro California event course in Quincy, CA. We are sending love to everybody impacted by the Dixie Fire and all others throughout Northern California, especially to our extended Grinduro family.

Fortunately, at the moment, there are no fires causing any threat to the new Grinduro CA venue or course in Mt. Shasta. You likely have heard of fires burning near Mount Shasta, but those are in reference to the actual mountain, not the town of Mt. Shasta where Grinduro CA is located. For clarity, we’ll refer to the physical mountain as “Mount Shasta” and the town where the event is located as “Mt. Shasta.” The current fires burning near Mount Shasta are on the other side of this extremely large mountain, and they are highly unlikely to get around to the Mt. Shasta side. Of course, this doesn’t mean that we won’t have new fires to worry about between now and September 18.

While the Grinduro CA area is not currently under threat of actual fire, there is the potential for air quality to be poor due to smoke blowing in from other fires. This is something that changes day to day depending on the direction and strength of the wind. Currently, some days the air is clear, and others are smokier. We are regularly monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mt. Shasta. If the AQI is above 150 at the time of the event, we will be forced to cancel because the EPA guidelines consider this level unhealthy with negative health effects. You can learn more about the AQI and how it relates to your health by clicking here. If you would like to see current AQI data for Mt. Shasta, click here to visit

Of course, we have no way to predict what the fire or smoke situation will be one month from now. If there does need to be an event cancellation due to fire or excessive smoke, it will have to be a last minute cancellation because we simply won't know what the situation is until much closer to the event. Sadly, this is just the hazard of events on the West Coast in the current climate situation. Together, we all need to remain nimble on this issue until the last minute. Until then, we are not considering cancellation and moving forward with planning the best party we possibly can!

Refund Policy Update

As a reminder, the Grinduro California Refund Policy is as follows:

No refunds will be available once registration is purchased. The only exception would be cancellation due to COVID-19 as outlined below. Races will be held rain, shine, sleet, or snow. In the event of extreme weather or natural disaster (including wildfire and related forest closures), the ride may be shortened, postponed, or canceled without refund.

Should the event be cancelled due to State Guidelines related to COVID, riders will have the option of:

  • Deferring until 2022
  • Receiving a refund according to the scale below (minus processing fees):
    • 90+ Days out from the event: 70% Refund
    • 60-89 Days out from the event: 50% Refund
    • 30-59 Days out from the event: 40% Refund
    • 1-29 Days out from the event: 20% Refund

This means that unless State Guidelines require that we cancel the event due to COVID-19, there will be no refunds or deferrals available under the normal event policy.

Registration Transfers

If you’d like to transfer your race registration, we have a very long waitlist of people eager to claim a spot at Grinduro CA. To request a transfer, please email with your registration details (name and email on the registration), and we will coordinate a transfer to the next person on the waitlist. You will then receive a full refund Note that there is a $35 transfer fee, and the transfer must be complete by Friday, September 10.

Thank You

We really appreciate your ongoing support and understanding as we work through all of these challenging situations. It is not an easy time to be an event organizer, and we are still charging hard to bring you an incredible event in Mt. Shasta.
